Jackson recorded a lifetime best of 49.47 seconds behind winner Salwa Eid Naser and silver medal winner Shaunae Miller-Uibo.

Naser’s pace erupted after 200m. She caught the long-striding Shaunae Miller-Uibo through the second bend and continued to power onto the straight.

Most expected her to pay for that effort in the closing yards, and although she slowed, the Bahraini – world U18 champion back in 2015 – wasn’t being caught. She holds her hand to her mouth and looks at the time in total disbelief.

Miller-Uibo worked hard over the final 100m, pushing all the way to the line and clocking an area record 48.87. But Naser was too far gone. The Bahamian was destined for silver as soon as Naser hit the gas. The Olympic champion has to settle for silver. It’s her first defeat since the 2017 world championships.

Fourth place Wadeline Jonathas (49.60) and fifth place Phyllis Francis (49.61) also get personal bests from what will go down as one of the greatest races of all time.
