Jamaica confirms 12 COVID-19 total cases, bans gatherings of more than 20 people; bars ordered closed

Jamaica’s prime minister Andrew Holness has announced a 14-day self-quarantine for all travellers from countries with cases of the Coronavirus following travel restrictions on the United Kingdom including either other countries.

The PM also ordered all non-essential work in the private and public sectors must be done from home for seven days. Public gatherings of more than 20 people have been restricted. Bars have been ordered closed, effective March 18 to March 25, 2020.

People who disobey the orders could be fined up to $1 million or imprisoned for up to 12 months per the Attorney General Malahoo Forte.

Prime Minister Holness also said the Government has approved a US$2.2 million contract to procure masks from overseas and they are expected to arrive in Jamaica next week.
