Akeem Bloomfield Wins Under-20 400M at 2016 Carifta Trials

Akeem Bloomfield clocked 46.51 seconds to win the under-20 400 metres final at the 2016 Carifta Trials held at the National Stadium on Sunday, March 6. The Kingston College student took charge of the field from the sound of the gun, then slowed down 10 metres from the finish line.

Bloomfield, who showed that he will be hard to beat at the upcoming ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys’ and Girls’ Championships, ran a qualifying time of 47.44 seconds to advances to the final.

The 17-year-old is currently the 400m National Junior Record holder of 44.93 in the boys class one 400 metres race, set at the 2015 ISSA Boys and Girls’ Athletics Champions. Akeem Bloomfield later won the gold medal in the Under-20 400m at the 2015 Carifta Games in 45.85 seconds.

The trials were held to select Jamaica’s track and field contingent for the 2016 Carifta Games to be hosted in George Town, Grenada, March 26-28.

The 2016 ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys’ and Girls’ Championships is set for March 15 – 19.
