Nigel Ellis Wins 200m title at JAM National Junior Championships

Jamaica’s fastest schoolboy, Nigel Ellis, easily won the 200m final in 20.72 seconds at the National Junior Championships at the National Stadium in Kingston on Sunday.

The annual two-day event is used to select athletes for the IAAF World Under 20 championship (formerly World Junior championship) to be held in Bydgoszcz, Poland, between July 19-25.

From lane four, The St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) student overtook Akeem Bloomfield of Kingston College (KC), in lane five, after the bend and powered away for an impressive victory into a headwind of (-3.8 m/s). Bloomfield finished second in 21.06 seconds ahead of Hujaye Cornwall of STETHS in third in 21.30 seconds.

Ellis, who was false-started in the heats of the 100m and subsequently disqualified on Saturday’s first day, kept his hopes of making the Jamaican team to the IAAF Under 20 championships formerly the World Junior Championships alive. Ellis has a personal best of 10.16 seconds in the 100m.
