Elaine Thompson won Heat 7 of Women’s 100m on Day 1 of Athletics at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on Friday.
The 10.70 national champion clocked 11.21 in a -1.0 m/s headwind ahead of Brazil’s Rosangela Santos (11.25) to advance to the semi-final set for Day 2, Saturday, August 13 in the afternoon session at 7:00 pm JA / 8:00pm ET.
Compatriot Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce won Heat 4 in 10.96 seconds, while Christiania Williams finished second in Heat 6 to qualify for the semi-finals, too.
After a poor start, rival Dafne Schippers of Netherlands won Heat 2 in 11.16 to advance to the semi-final, while Tori Bowie of USA won Heat 3 in 11.13 and Blessing Okagbare came in second in 11.16 in said race — all in a 0.0 m/s wind. English Gardner won Heat 8 in 11.09 in a -0.2 m/s headwind.
