Thomas-Dodd improved with her final attempted, but falls just short of displacing Gong Lijiao at the top of the standings – a PB of 19.47m leaves her 8cm off of the Chinese thrower’s best. The Jamaican is first-ever for a woman from her country in a world champs throws competition.

For Lijiao, it’s a golden cherry to go on top of a fine cake of a season. This win follows up her world-leading put to clinch the Diamond League title in Brussels earlier this summer. It’s also her second consecutive world champs gold. It also completes a remarkable run of world championships podium finishes: the affable 30-year-old won a medal at every edition going back to 2009. Insane.

Bronze goes to 2015 world champion Christina Schwanitz, who followed that win by taking time out to have a child. It caps a great return for the German.
