UK prime minister David Cameron faced calls for reparations for slavery on his visit to Jamaica to meet its prime minister Portia Simpson-Miller on Tuesday. Jamaican MPs planned to turn their back on him if he failed to address the issue.<\/p>\n

Cameron reiterated the long-standing position of the United Kingdom that \u201cwe do not believe reparations is the right approach\u201d after\u00a0announcing a\u00a0\u00a325m deal to build\u00a0a prison in Jamaica so that Jamaican prisoners\u00a0in the UK can be sent to serve sentences on the island.\u00a0Jamaicans described the deal as a slap in the face following calls for reparations from UK<\/a>\u00a0and demand that UK pay up. But how much should they pay?<\/p>\n

<\/iframe><\/p>\nAs <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2015\/sep\/30\/british-slavery-reparations-qa?CMP=fb_gu\" target=\"_blank\">reported<\/a> by The\u00a0Guardian,\u00a0after the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833, the British government agreed to pay \u00a320m in compensation to 46,000 slave-owners. The equivalent sum today would be \u00a32bn according to the <a class=\" u-underline\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bankofengland.co.uk\/education\/Pages\/resources\/inflationtools\/calculator\/flash\/default.aspx\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"in-body-link\">Bank of England\u2019s inflation calculator<\/a>. The <a class=\" u-underline\" href=\"http:\/\/www.leighday.co.uk\/News\/2014\/March-2014\/CARICOM-nations-unanimously-approve-10-point-plan\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"in-body-link\">Caricom Reparations Commission<\/a> has not put a figure on Britain\u2019s reparations bill.<\/p>\nInstead, it issued a 10-point plan that includes debt write-offs for Caribbean governments and contributions to public health and education spending. In 2004, the Rastafarian Nation in Jamaica said <a class=\" u-underline\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2004\/sep\/08\/religion.uk\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"in-body-link\">European countries once involved in the slave trade, especially Britain, should pay $129bn (\u00a372.5bn)<\/a> to resettle 500,000 Jamaican Rastafarians in Africa.<\/p>\nHow else can Britain make amends for slavery?<\/strong><\/p>\nJeremy Corbyn, the new leader of the opposition, Labour Party, says the UK should work to improve trade relations to acknowledge their historic debt to Jamaica.
